Reasoning with Narratives

چکیده
Reasoning with Narratives’ is an attempt to combine narrative theory with theories of knowledge representation and knowledge acquisition in order to establish a foundation for computer aided narrative analysis. The theoretical foundation in the area of narratology is mainly derived from a structural approach. A number of narratologies are examined, and a unified model based on the notions of succession, transformation, and mediation is presented. Furthermore, an elaboration of the actantial model is presented in order to account for matters of narrative mediation. Formal representations are written in PROLOG+CG, a language that combines PROLOG (PROgramming in LOGic) with the Conceptual Graphs formalism developed by John Sowa, based on the works of Charles Sanders Peirce. A case study in form of a formal representation of a full-scale narrative is presented, and a number of ontology-driven and relation-oriented queries are conducted and evaluated in order to justify the claim that narrative analysis can be carried out in a computational environment, revealing deep structures as well as surface structures of a narrative. The motive of the engraving is ‘the battle of the Midianites’. With an army of only three hundred men, Gideon led a nightly attack at the camp of Midian. From three directions, soldiers armed with torches, jars, and trumpets, surprised the Midian army, and startled them with the terrible war-cry, "For the Lord and for Gideon" (Jud 7:18)

Adult age differences in autobiographical reasoning in narratives.
Two studies examined age differences in autobiographical reasoning within narratives about personal experiences. In Study 1 (n=63), people completed brief interviews about turning points and crises in their lives. Older participants were more likely to narrate crises in ways that connected the experience to the speaker's sense of self, that is, to show autobiographical reasoning. This increase ...

The present study investigated the reasoning of high and low-delusion-prone individuals on probability estimation tasks using emotionally neutral and delusional narratives. Undergraduate students (N = 33) who were classified as high-delusion-prone or low-delusion-prone based on their scores on a widely used measure of delusion-proneness in reasoning research (the Peters et al. Delusions Invento...
متن کاملAnchored Narratives in Reasoning about Evidence
This paper concerns the reasoning with stories, evidence and generalisations in a legal context. We will make some notions from the existing Anchored Narratives theory more clear by making use of two formal techniques from AI, namely causal-abductive reasoning and default-style argumentation. We will propose a combination of these two formalisms which solves some of the problems of the causal-a...
متن کاملFormalizing Narratives Using Nested Circumscription
The representation of narratives of actions and observations is a current issue in Knowledge Representation, where traditional plan-oriented treatments of action seem to fall short. To address narratives, Pinto and Reiter have extended Situation Calculus axioms, Kowalski and Sergot have introduced the Event Calculus in Logic Programming, and Baral et al. have de ned the speci cation language L ...
متن کاملFormalizing Narratives using Nested Circumscription and Value Minimization
Representing and reasoning about narratives together with the ability to do hypothetical reasoning is important for agents in a dynamic world. These agents need to record their observations and action executions as a narrative and at the same time, to account for exogenous changes in the world, need to make plans (or re-plan) from the current situation. The early formalisms that reasoned about ...
متن کاملNI-DiscoverHistory: Meta-narrative for Explanation Bounding
Long-lived goal reasoning systems that reason over their history confront the bounding problem–the impracticality of reasoning over a large, ever-growing experience-base. This is a problem with some explanation systems that use the history of their observations to inform beliefs about the current state of the world. We propose to apply narrative intelligence (NI), which includes the ability to ...
